Disciplinary Records
Who Can View My Student Disciplinary Records?
Your disciplinary file as a student is protected by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
Your file is confidential in the office.
FERPA does permit disclosure to school officials with legitimate educational interests without consent under specific circumstances. A school official is a person employed by the university in an administrative, supervisory, academic or research, or support staff position; a person or company with whom the university has contracted; a person serving on the Board of Trustees; or a student serving on an official committee, such as a disciplinary or grievance committee, or assisting another school official in performing his/her tasks.
- A school official has legitimate educational interest if the official needs to review an education record in order to fulfill his or her professional responsibility.
- Upon request, the university discloses education records without consent to officials of another school in which a student seeks or intends to enroll.
Do I Have Access To My Records?
You have the right to inspect and review your educational records within 45 days of the day the university receives a request for access. Students should submit to the Office of Student Conduct, a written request that identifies the file they wish to inspect. The university official will make arrangements for access and notify the student of the time and place where the file may be viewed. Requests to access your disciplinary file can be sent to conduct@iusb.edu.
I am applying to graduate school and they are asking if I have any disciplinary records
Pay close attention to the application and what they are requesting. You may or may not need to share your prior history with the institution depending on the request. If you are unsure whether you meet their criteria for discloser, set a time to review your disciplinary file. You may review your file and verify the information by sending an email to conduct@iusb.edu. The Office of Student Conduct may be asked to verify your prior history (regardless of disclosure from the student). We expect all students to be honest and forthcoming in your application responses
