Suicide Prevention: QPR Gatekeeper Training
The Student Counseling Center offers free QPR Gatekeeper Training to the IU South Bend campus community. QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) is a nationally-recognized program that teaches participants to recognize the warning signs, clues, and communications of people contemplating suicide and to act to prevent a possible tragedy. A "gatekeeper" is anyone (friend, classmate, colleague or instructor) in a position to recognize warning signs that someone may be contemplating suicide. QPR is not counseling or a form of treatment, but teaches three potentially life-saving skills:
How to Question a person about suicide,
How to Persuade the person to get help, and
How to Refer the person to an appropriate resource.
Gatekeeper training is offered in small group settings and takes approximately one and a half hours. Training sessions are appropriate for staff, faculty and student groups and can be scheduled by calling the Student Counseling Center at 520-4125.
