Math Boot Camp

IU South Bend is offering free boot camps to help you prepare for Fall classes and/or increase your placement scores so that you can place into the appropriate Math course. Benefits include refreshing and strengthening math skills, beginning college math at a higher level and with more confidence, enjoying engaging math activities, and developing relationships with faculty, staff, and tutors.

Any Fall 2021 incoming IU South Bend freshmen who received a placement score of 0 to 36 in ALEKS. If you have already taken the placement exam but do not know your score, you can log in to One.IU and check through your Student Center. Click on Academics, then Test Scores. Next click on PLTSB-South Bend Placement Tests to view your scores.

Students should have taken the ALEKS Math Placement Exam before starting the boot camp, and will be required to retake the placement at the end of the program. Based on the scores, we will work with each student who places higher to switch their Fall 2021 Math class.

Yes. Preference will be given to students planning to take a Math class.

The Math Boot Camp is a four-week program. The Boot Camp will run from Monday, July 12 through Thursday, August 5.

Students will participate in workshops, engaging math activities, and tutoring sessions that will help them prepare for their first college-level math class.

It is a hybrid program where certain activities happen on campus, and others via Zoom.

  • Math classes with instructors will be held on the IU South Bend campus. Students will attend one two-hour class per week on Monday or Tuesday. Students must select a first and second choice for their class time from the following options when they apply:
    • Mondays 10 am – 12 noon
    • Mondays 12 noon – 2 pm
    • Mondays 6 – 8 pm
    • Tuesdays 10 am – 12 noon
    • Tuesdays 12 noon – 2 pm
    • Tuesdays 6 – 8 pm
  • In addition, each student will be paired with a math tutor for required weekly one-on-one tutoring sessions. These will be scheduled based on individual student’s availability. Students can choose virtual or in-person math tutoring sessions.

Students save tuition and fees on Fall 2021 classes by earning a Fall 2021 Scholarship in the amount of $150. The scholarship is renewable for Spring 2022 in the amount of $200.

Fall 2021 scholarship in the amount of $150 will be applied toward students’ Fall 2021 tuition and fees. If a student’s bursar bill is paid in full, they will receive a refund. Criteria for Fall 2021 scholarships is provided below:

  • Successful completion of program elements (class and tutoring attendance and engagement, ALEKS placement modules practice, retaking the placement exam)
  • Students will sign a Student Agreement the week prior to the start of their Camp.
  • Enrollment in 12 or more credit hours in Fall 2021
  • Students do not need to raise their placement to receive a Fall 2021 scholarship.

Spring 2022 scholarships in the amount of $200 will be applied toward students’ Spring 2022 tuition and fees. If a student’s bursar bill is paid in full, they will receive a refund. Criteria for Spring 2022 scholarships is provided below:

  • Completion of a minimum of 12 credits in Fall 2021 with a GPA of at least 2.5. Withdrawals are acceptable as long as a student still completes 12 credits with a GPA of 2.5 or higher.
  • Having used any Academic Centers for Excellence (ACE) tutoring service five or more times throughout the Fall 2021 semester with at least one visit in September, one in October, and one in November
  • Meeting with an ACE Study Smarter Coach once in September, once in October and once in November
  • Submission of a short essay by December 1, 2021

English Boot Camp

Any Fall 2021 incoming IU South Bend freshmen who received a placement score of 10, 20, or 30 on their English Placement Exam. If you have already taken the placement exam but do not know your score, you can log in to One.IU and check through your Student Center. Click on Academics, then Test Scores. Next click on PLTSB-South Bend Placement Tests to view your scores.

  • English classes with instructors will be held synchronously via Zoom. Students will attend two two-hour classes per week on Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday. Students must select a first and second choice for their class time from the following options when they apply:
    • Monday/Wednesday 10 am – 12 noon
    • Monday/Wednesday 1 – 3 pm
    • Tuesday/Thursday 6 – 8 pm
  • In addition, each student will be paired with a writing tutor for required weekly one-on-one Zoom tutoring sessions. These will be scheduled based on individual student’s availability.
